60–90 days out
Shortlist neighborhoods with the Family Map, verify school boundaries for every candidate address directly with the districts, and take one scouting trip that includes a school-hours drive and an evening walk. If you'll need before/after-school care, start those waitlists now — they're longer than escrow.
30–60 days out
Lock housing (see the rent-first vs. buy-first guide for sequencing), schedule movers, gather school registration documents — proof of residency requirements are specific and districts differ — and transfer medical and dental records. Register for any seasonal youth programs whose windows fall in this stretch; they won't wait for your escrow to close.
Move week and after
Utilities and city services first, school enrollment appointments second, library cards third (they unlock more than books — museum passes and programs ride along).
