The JG program
Huntington Beach's Junior Lifeguard program is the classic Surf City childhood: multi-week summer sessions of ocean skills, fitness, and safety for school-age kids, run by the city's Marine Safety Division. Registration opens in late winter and sessions fill — put the sign-up date on your calendar the way locals do. Which beach for which kid
The pier-adjacent City Beach brings energy and crowds; Huntington State Beach off Magnolia and Brookhurst offers easier parking and fire rings for family evenings; Bolsa Chica State Beach runs quieter with bike-path access; and Mother's Beach in the Harbour is the protected-water spot where toddlers meet the ocean gently. The dog beach north of the pier rounds out the rotation for families with a retriever in tow.
The unwritten rules
Summer parking strategy matters (arrive before ten or after three), the south side of the pier is the family side, bonfire rings at the state beaches are first-come territory worth claiming early, and the bike path from Bolsa Chica to the river mouth is the best free family outing in Orange County. Fourth of July downtown is a marathon, not a sprint — locals plan it like a campaign.
